A Brief History on Walt Disney
Walt Disney was born in Chicago in 1901 to Flora and Elias Disney. When Walt was four years old the Disney family moved to Marceline, Missouri. Farm life was hard, but Walt would always have a fond memory of Marceline. Walt had three older brothers Herbert, Raymond and Roy and one sister named Ruth. Elias Disney came down with typhoid, he recovered but farming was something he could no longer do. In 1911 the Disney house was sold and they moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Elias purchased a newspaper route and Walt was put to work for the first time in his life it was a tough job too. He and his brother Roy were counted on to service it. The newspaper route took a lot of his time and he did not have much time for school, or time to prepare so he was never a great student. Eventually the newspaper route made enough money for Elias to invest in a Jelly firm in Chicago called the O-Zell company. Flora, Elias and Ruth went off to Chicago and Walt stayed behind with his brother Herbert and got a job for the summer as a “news butch” selling soda-pop and newspapers on the railroad.
When the summer ended he then joined his parents and sister in Chicago. Walt was decided that he wanted to do something with his drawing. His cartoons showed his interest in the Great War that was happing at that time. He decided to join a Red Cross unit that would take 17 year olds, as he was not old enough to join the army. He figured that he was only a year off and could manage a forgery.
After the war, Walt made up his mind that he would return to Kansas City where he decided that he wanted to be an artist. Shortly after that Walt got a job at the Pesman- Ruben Art Studio. After running across the word “Animation” he started to make his own animation and called his work laugh-o-grams which eventually turned into a company. Eventually his laugh-o-grams went out of business so he went where every other movie makers go, to Hollywood.
